Bilateral Hand Transplantation in the Setting of Simultaneous Face Transplantation: Lessons Learned
Matthew Carty, MD; Bohdan Pomahac, MD Division of Plastic Surgery, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Jamaica Plain, MA
Concomitant face and bilateral hand allotransplantation represents a formidable surgical challenge that has, to date, only been attempted on two occasions worldwide. We present our experience with the second ever simultaneous full face and bilateral hand transplant, and summarize the technical, logistical and ethical issues related to this procedure based on our institutional experience. A special focus is placed on elucidation of the key learning points garnered through the hand transplantation portion of the case, including procurement, recipient preparation, transplantation and aftercare.
