Carlos Henrique Fernandes, MD; Jorge Raduan Neto, MD; João Baptista G. dos Santos, MD; Flavio Faloppa, MD; Walter Manna Albertoni, MD Orthopedic Surgery / Hand Surgery Group, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil
Introduction: The aim of this work was to provide an evaluation of research yield from wrist arthroscopy. The analysis was limited to articles published between January 1, 1990 and March 31, 2011. Methods: Data were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) Science Citation Expanded database. The database was searched using two different terms: Wrist arthroscopy and Arthroscopy of the wrist. Results: A total of 426 wrist arthroscopy-associated items were published in 89 journals over the study period. The Journal of Hand Surgery-American Volume and Arthroscopy-The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery had the greatest number of publications, with 63 articles each (14.78% each). Of all the publications retrieved(426), original articles were 387(90,84%), but only six were randomized controlled trials. All of the top-ranked researchers were orthopedic and hand surgeons. The majority of publications were from a limited number of countries, with most originating from the United States (191). Conclusions: Publications on wrist arthroscopy have been increasing annually, but these are few compared to knee and shoulder arthroscopy. At a time when bibliometric indicators are increasingly employed in performance assessment, the findings we present should provide useful information for the development and dissemination of wrist arthroscopy information.
